The 7 Traits of a Great Communicator
‘Pull’ Your Audience in to Your Story Through Communication Excellence

In every industry, profession and level, there is an increasing need to tell a compelling story, whether it be for marketing a product or service, pitching a new Innovation idea, or convincing your boss that you deserve a raise. Because of this, Effective Communication is quickly becoming one of the most essential soft skills of the new age. But how do we actually become a better communicator? Much of the current guidance on communication focuses on the ‘art’ of storytelling, which can be a struggle for those who feel that they were not born with the ‘gift’ of great communication. But Great Communicators actually employ a combination of art and science, and in a manner that anyone can learn. The holistic combination of both stylistic factors as well as process factors forms the foundation of a new theme known as ‘Communication Excellence’.

Communication Excellence is all about applying the proven methods behind achieving personal or organisational excellence (change, improvement and transformation) to the subject of effective communication. We will show you how it is important to not only possess great personal communication skills (oration, writing, story-making and storytelling) but it is equally critical to have a great personal communication process. Communication Excellence is a way to systematically become the best communicators we can be, not by luck but through a series of ’key traits’ that are essential for great communication. You will learn how to apply the cutting-edge approaches to achieving excellence, such as Agile and Design Thinking, to the art and science of communication, enabling you to become a truly Great Communicator.
    Objective
This aim of this course is for you to become a better communicator by understanding the essential traits of great communication. Participants will learn the various practices, approaches and methods to achieve Communication Excellence in your writing, speaking and presentations. You will see that communication excellence can apply to your personal lives as well as your professional careers, equipping you with a powerful skillset to achieve real self-improvement for total life enrichment.
    Outline
The Compelling Need to be Better Communicators

We will examine the current state of Effective Communication and why it is becoming one of the most essential skill sets of the new age. We will explore current trends in key areas of communication, such as Story Thinking as well as Storytelling. You will see that nearly everything in our personal and professional lives revolves around stories and the process of generating and conveying them in engaging and authentic ways, presenting a compelling need to become a truly Great Communicator.

    The Communication Excellence Framework

We will introduce a comprehensive approach for achieving excellence in communication. You will learn the basic dimensions of Communication Excellence according to this model, which is heavily based on proven management and innovation techniques for change and transformation. The framework starts with establishing purpose then moves to improving the communication process, including the art and science of establishing ‘Pull’ in communications, as opposed to the traditional ‘Push’ approach that is still prevalent around the world. Based on sound process, we can then work on developing improved personal communication capabilities, including soft skills as well as personal mindsets and habits. Examples will be provided to reinforce the concepts for each dimension.

The 7 Traits of a Great Communicator

Using the Communication Excellence framework as a basis, we will examine the Key Traits that are essential to becoming a Great Communicator. Using examples, cases and discussions, we will explore the characteristics of great communicators, past and present, and see what elements they have in common. We will see how anyone will be able to internalise the key traits in their quest to become a Great Communicator.

    Applying Communication Excellence to Yourself

Participants will get to apply the 7 Traits to themselves. Working pairs will be formed to assist each other in a Role-Playing approach to a ‘teacher/learner’ relationship so that each person gets to coach as well as be coached on their communication excellence journeys. Each participant will learn how to ask and answer key questions that are essential towards achieving excellence in the 7 Traits.

    Moving Forward With Change

We will have an open team discussion of key learnings and personal experiences, sharing perspectives on how to change personal thinking, practices and habits in order to realise the state of being the Great Communicator that each of us strives to reach. Methods for continuous follow-up and learning will be recommended, including further coursework,
reading, and other developmental approaches. As a conclusion, Key Points on the Communication Excellence Journey will be presented for final thoughts.
    Who should attend
This course is aimed broadly at staff and professionals who are proactive in nature and wish to be on the leading edge of their personal journeys towards Excellence and Transformation. They will leave this course equipped and energised to bring positive change to themselves as well as to their organisations, by becoming great communicators through better story-thinking, story-crafting and story-telling.
