    "Singlish" or Standard English?
    Singlish is a part of the Singaporean culture. In spoken form it can be a good ice breaker and can help to build rapport. However, in a work environment and for those not familiar with Singlish it can get a little confusing! The key to effective communication is being able to code switch from Singlish to Standard English and vice versa when necessary.
    This fun one-day workshop will guide you through the key differences between Singlish and Standard English and enable you to code switch in any situation.
    Objective
    The course objectives are:
    • To develop an awareness of the key differences between Singlish and Standard English
    • To be able to code switch effectively in different situations
    • To appreciate the standard rules and conventions for using Standard English

    10 key topics covered in this session include:
    1. What is "Singlish" versus "Standard English"?
    2. When is it appropriate to use "Singlish and/or Standard English"?
    3. Code switch and commonly misused words;
    4. Common "Singlish" expressions and the equivalent in "Standard English";
    5. Common grammar and sentence structure issues;
    6. Pronunciation and grammar;
    7. Commonly mispronounced words;
    8. Improve articulation, word stress and sentence stress.
    9. Grammar practice for conversational purposes;
    10. Review

    This interactive workshop is designed for managers, secretaries, executives, supervisors, customer service professionals and anyone who wants to develop a deeper appreciation for the English language and improve their general communication skills.

    Profile of Emma Jarman-Jones
    Emma Jarman-Jones specialises in developing and enhancing workplace communication skills. This work includes writing, speaking, interpersonal and management skills training. She has over 20 years experience training in Singapore, as well as regionally in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.

    Emma has worked as an external consultant and trainer with both private and public sectors, designing, customising and delivering programs, and coaching individuals. She believes in the potential of every person and is dedicated to providing the highest quality of training that will benefit the individual, as well as the organisation. She has worked with companies such as StarHub, SingTel, BASF South East Asia, BASF Vietnam and Malaysia, DBS Bank, Nokia, Carlton Hotel and The British Club.

    Emma holds an MBA from Imperial College, London. She has also completed a Diploma in Human Resource Development at the Singapore Institute of Management and is a certified People Developer Consultant.
